LAB

LAB, or Love Across Borders, is a student group some friends and I have started.  It’s going to be so much fun and hopefully make a tremendous impact on campus.  I’m so glad I’m surrounded by friends who can really make this successful.

This morning I worked on digging some rocks out of the ditch and leveling out the sides.  Then I worked on some seemingly poinless restoration the rest of the day.  I’m tired but I want to go caching.  I don’t think dinner will be very filling and that annoys me alittle.  I’m hoping my parents will be able to send me BBQ sauce for the contest of the states!  I hope I find that cache at Jackson River; it will be ab it of a walk but it will be worth it 🙂  Adam chews with his mouth open; that annoys me as well…

I’m so sleepy!  But about to play Catan so I need to snap out of it.  Also I think I’ve started to eat more claories than I’m buring…not cool; cutting back tomorrow.  All I did today was work on the rock wall with Pat.  I think we bonded a little today.  He’s riding the bus to D.C. with me.  Listedned to a gab session featuring Dawn and assisted with a good taco dinner.  One more work day at Bogan Run tomorrow, then a day off.  I look forward to it and 4th of July fireworks!  Also just realized with the coming of tomorrow there will only be 5 more weeks in Virginia.  The time has flown by and I”m content with the activities thus far.  🙂

I think of all the worries people seem to find/ and how they’re in a hurry to complicate their minds/ by chasing after money and reams that can’t come true./ I’m glad that we are different; there’s better things to do./ May others plan their future; I’m busy loving youuuu…/ 1-2-3-4 Sha la la la la la live for today./ And don’t worry ’bout tomorrow heeeyyyy.

Since I’m visiting North TX the wknd after my bday (didn’t happen), I’ve developed a scheme to visit the high school and old friends before I get to my sister’s place.  This bday month is going to be so spectacular!  Especially since I get to share it with a special someone 🙂  I’ve got my own version of Kurt Vonnegut’s speach on Youtube playing in my head.  If I could recall ita all I’d try to write it down.  Today I just stuck to the rock wall, made crush, completed the wall, rubbed skin off my arms trying to carry a rock.  Then helped dig the drainage ditch.  I discovered that I really like the swinging above the head motion of the sledge, axe and pick.  I really hope I’m able to continue it back home.

Happy 4th of July!  This has been a very good holiday so far.  Slept in, found a geocache on the Jackson River trail with John, watched Avatar for free at The Homestead (I forgot how violent it was) and now we are cooking supper.  Later we go to a Beatles concert and fireworks at The Homestead.  I’m excited about everything!  Also this morning I received 13 messages on my phone.  I even got a message from Dave, somebody I hadn’t heard from in a really long time…Less than 5 weeks until I go home 🙂

Things I look forward to today:

Geocaching and a nice long bike ride!

Today Laura and I worked on trail restoration.  The day started pretty late but it is our fisrt day back from off-hitch, and our 3rd work hitch!!  I have to say that Muddy Run is my favorite trail so far.  It lived up to its name today with the rain; restoring rocky, muddy tread is a bit difficult.  I like this trail the most because of how beautiful it is.  It runs right along the river and there’s this one spot where a dry rock almost totally crosses the river, creating a nice bench right in the middle of the river.  I find that spot so relaxing.

I find the most relaxing spots for me are right next to rivers.  I think my love for rivers and water in general makes my graduate school degree choice an excellent idea.

I received my truffles in the mail today.  They were all melted but still delicious!  For some reason the white chocolate ones held up better than the milk or dark chocolate…I wonder why that is?  Today Laura and I worked on the restoration again.  Then John cme along and cut out way more bank than I thought we were supposed to cut.  Also when Laura and I thought we were done, John was super nit-picky about it so now we have to do all the finishig touches tomorrow.  We also discussed what we may be doing during the next work hitches.  If word from higher up say they want us to finish all fo Bogan Run, we may finsih out the summer on that one trial.  I’m cool with this I think; it means we will be moving to a different campsite on the other side of the moutnain.  I really don’t feel like roughin’ it in the backcountry so aying at a cmapiste is fine with me.  I also just finished the Fountainhead.  It was amazing.  Objectivism=Individualism; Happiness stemming from oneself; not existing for others.

Tomorrow is july!  I worked on the trench all day and after digging out a stump, something I enjoy, I worked on digging and gave up on an impossible stone,  Today was probably the most unproductive day I’ve had so far; I got tired and frustrated very quickly.  then Laura and I tackled the gigantic rock and actually moved it (when Pat couldn’t haha).  We’ll still have some rock moving to do tomorrow.  I think I might look for a job when I get back home, the kind that involves sledging rocks and chopping trees with an axe…Tonight we had an oreo bonding moment.  That was the first time I laughed that hard and much all summer 🙂  Upon returning to camp after completing Americorps paperwork and finalizing my DC trip (yay!), John and I encountered a campfire which was a huge surprise; Then the group went for a look a the stars.  Gorgeous; good job western Virginia.

Cold weather time

I’m usually not one for cold weather,  but the move-in of this cold front has been quite pleasant.  Maybe because I have someone to snuggle with 🙂

Today did a bunch of hinge work, then ate lunch in a nice rain.  The storm came on big over the mtn, very loud.  Then worked on clearing some laurel and got done an hour early.  Hiked out the tools and went to camp.  About to play Catan and ready for the off hitch!  Just one more short day.  Really enjoying reading the Fountainhead.  I was super surprised at how quickly I got into it.  I haven’t been this excited about a book in awhile.  Incomplete Sentences! Pie!  Yay!! (Must’ve been a little goofy this entry)

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Dug up some stumps and a drainage redirection ditch at Muddy Run today.  Then did a quick tool sharpening and camp breakdown.  Ian locked his keys in his car so we ate at Country Cafe without him.  The PB pie was delicious!  And I spoke too soon about not fearing for my life when Adam drives the truck…Lake Moomaw was gorgeous as usual, especially under the nearly full moon.

I need to be more concerned about leaving stuff unattended.  I also wish I were somewhere else right now, alone.  I actually wish I could sleep right now but there will be too much noise going around witht ealcohol flowing.  Tomorrow I hope to get some solitude, continental breakfast, geocaching hike, maybe a nap; sounds wonderful.

Sunday, June 27, 2010

Yesterday was a pleasant day.  Saw a car show,

ate ice cream, got free stuff, ate a farmer’s market cantalope, visited the transportation museum,

read and relaxed by the river…

Today was full of fast food and boredom.  Tomorrow we’re back to the work hitch.  I’m so happy it’s almost July.  Less than 6 wks until I go home!  I’m so glad I got to talk to K.C. for so long 🙂  I can’t wait for mail and the 4th of July.  I really like our neighbors.  They helped Adam back the trailer in after 3 previous tries, they are super loud and probably drunk, but their music taste is excellent!  Classic rock all t he way!  ‘Come on baby make it hurt so good’ (haha)

Itching to camp

I have a brand new tent that I need to bust out soon!  We were going to go this wknd, but my lack of reserving a site ahead of time led to a postponement.  It might be a good thing since I have lots of stuff to do.

Friday, June 18, 2010

Today we were set up with the task of brushing and hinging the whole trail.  Lets just say we failed to do that.  We also failed to do anything with drainage.  With the extra hour to our day we did get a sizable amount of work done though.  I’m very tired from walking the whole mountain top to bottom.  Another thing that happened today: KC didn’t find out if he’s getting a tax return; they still haven’t contacted him.  I’m a bit disappointed at that.  I went through obscene measures to get that message and I still didn’t get an answer…*sigh* Oh well, I’ll get over it soon enough.  I still hope he’s able to mke it though.  I’m tired of hangin out with my crew all the time.  I need something to help me last the rest of the summer…

Saturday June 19, 2010

All Laura and I did today was brush.  We made it almost to the directional arrow.  I sure hope we can finshh Bogan Run East in the next few days.  After today’s feedback session I’ve come to the conclusions that I’ve been a little too selfish lately and I’m totally not used to working in a group; I much prefer working alone…I still miss home despite the beauty of this place and I still know I could never live here.  It doesn’t call to me and the poison ivy just gets in the way.  I took an amazing solar shower; I feel so clean!  This work hitch is almost over.  By next Saturday this summer will be half-way through.  I’ve never been so excited to return home.

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Happy Father’s Day!  My dad enjoyed his phone call, not so much his brother having a stroke.  I hope he rcovers sooon…Today pretty much all I did was roll rocks down a hill which was pretty fun and I got to chop a nranch off a tree to get to a rocl.  I really enjoy using the ax.  I think I might purchase one sometime.  It could be handy in the future.  Tomorrow is the first day of sumer!  And I’ve been really conscous about HFCS lately; I think I might even phase it out soon 🙂 also got to talk to KC fora bit.  Just a little less than 7 wks until I see him and home again.

Today I weed whipped  until lunch, much to my dismay my hands cramped incredibly, my back hurt from carrying my backpack the whole time, and i have a hot spot which luckily has not turned into a blister.  The good hing about my alone time with the weed whip was I saw two deer.  The deer here are a really light brown color and there aren’t as many as there are in TX. After lunch I did hinge work and then we left.  I pretty much hiked the whole mountain today.  After work we toured the bed and breakfast.  It’s an amazing house, decorated in period everything, style and actual things from the period (1800’s).  The woman who runs it gave us a tour.  Her and her husband have been renovating it for over 20 yrs.  They both quit their jobs in Ohio to do it.  Once they saw the house they fell in love.  It is owned by the Forest Service, along with 8000 acres of land.  It’s such a beautiful place and it’s haunted!  There’s a spring house out back to keep things cool.  Summersby was filmed there.  Hollywood ripped them off.  I cost $28,000 to replaster the house after the movie and they were only reimbursed $9000.  Maize and actual slave houses were imported there to make the movie look good.  I want to watch it because I’m curious…(Done!)  After that, made an awesome chili, drank too much hot cocoa and going to bed!
